Day 5 -- Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Monday 7/2/2001
We woke up with the sun just before 7. Lilly got out for a quick morning run while I sat outside and putzed around with the laptop, trying to install his new camera memory connector car to the laptop. The phone guy showed up and wanted to repair our site's broken phone jack. Turned out to be sand and salt that had jammed the contact. I watched the repair guy clean out the jack and perform some testing which worked. After he was done, the repairman told me that all was in order. A few moments later I walked over and tried -- no dial-tone! The repair man probably did not try out the jack after having screwed it all back together again. Fortunately, the neighbor's jack appeared to work. So I plugged in the Airstream into that jack and then tried inside the trailer -- no dial-tone. This is frustrating. Not only are we suffering from wiring problems outside the trailer, but we're having problems inside too.
Vincent, Pascal and Paule came by our trailer just after 8. They had slept well although it was a bit muggy. They had woken up during the night from fire works. We ate breakfast; cereals, bagels and coffee. After that we headed down to the beach. It was low tide so the beach was very shallow. Vincent rented two chairs and an umbrella for the week. What luxury! The kids played down at the beach. The beach was very full.
The beach by the campground goes on for miles
Around noon time we got back up into the trailer and prepared a sandwich lunch. Vincent started working on lemon chicken for this evening. It smelled very good. We ate a few jelly-squids for desert. The kids played around inside while we sat and took it easy. After lunch the kids played with cards and we listened to music. It was hot outside. We needed a break away from the sun. We were all comfortably baked.
Parked at the umbrella and chairs that Vincent rented
At 4pm we got an afternoon shower. We just had to get outside of the trailer, though. We'd been inside of it for about four hours now. We all went out for a little shopping round. We first visited Camping World. It was fun to see all the things we'd only seen in a catalog before. We bought a few minor items, including a map of the USA with stickers for all the states. We plan to put that on our door to remind the kids where we've been. We drove my Wal-Mart as well and shopped assorted items we needed. We went back and prepared our dinner. It was raining outside, again. We decided to eat inside even though we'd already spent several hours inside. But it is nice to be inside even if it is a bit crowded. The dinner was very good.
