Day 43 -- Resting in and exploring Valdez, AK

Wednesday 8/2/2006

When we got up, Isabella and Erik went down to the docks in Valdez to do some fishing. Lilli prepared breakfast for everyone. The kids eventually showed up and we ate in the trailer. I felt I had fallen behind so much with the diary that I started to update it early on in the morning.

The kids had asked about going to the other side of the bay in Valdez and try some fishing. Lilli took them out while I stayed behind and worked on the diary. They apparently had a great time doing it. It was a place where you snagged pink salmon. They only stayed there for 15 minutes during which they snagged three salmon. When they got back to the campground, they got help to clean the fish. The locals indicated that this particular kind of salmon might not be the best at this time of year, although it was eatable. We cooked one pink salmon along with some that Lilli had bought at the local store. Erik and Isabella tasted the pink salmon for dinner and it was not very good at all. They claimed that the thought that the fish was alive and they had killed it made it disgusting. It also lacked any taste, texture or color. So we all shifted to the purchased salmon instead, which tasted much better. We assumed that the better one had been caught off-shore.

For the first time during this trip I did not leave the trailer. The day went by very fast but I managed to catch up several days in the diary.
