Day 1: Friday 25-jun-1999
From: Merrimack, NH
To: Penn Wood Airstream Park, Limestone, PA
Distance: 550mi (880km)
Time: 12 h
This is the big day we've been waiting for. We've been talking about this trip for about two years now. We had used this spring to work out problems with the trailer ('98 32ft Airstream Excella) and the truck ('93 Chevy Suburban). The day did not start too well. Karl had been having a stomach flu the whole night and mom have not been sleeping too much. Hopefully Karl will not have any problem on the trip.
We got ready and were on our way at about 5:50am. We had a running rendezvous with Pam Bleakney on I290, 2nd exit. It worked out really well.
The trip went fine. Some of the hills in eastern Pennsylvania were tough to climb with the truck. We dropped down to about 45mph (65km/h) towards the end of some. They were very long.
The CB-radio is very helpful when you are travelling in group. In the past we've used it mainly to listen to the truckers. Now, we were actually able to use it two-way to discuss breaks and road choices.
We had lunch break in Wilkes-Barre, PA. They had really nice pic-nic tables with new varnish on them.
The frige have been going off so We're afraid our ice-cream will be a milk-shake by tonight. Turned out that the problem is that the gas flame gets blown out by the wind from the passing trucks.
We arrived at the campground at around 5:30 pm. This is a private campground for Airstreamers only. Nice place with a little pond, grassy sites. There were 7 other families there, on their way to Dayton, Ohio. We had a rendezvous with some of them and planned to travel together the next morning. After dinner, we skipped the social cocktail and went to bed -- we were so tired from the long drive.
