Day 24 -- Virginia Beach, Virginia

Saturday 7/21/2001

We got up around 7:30. We slept well without air conditioning. We had left the windows open. It was very comfortable, about 71F. Isabella had a morning mood. We bought a 1/2 gallon of milk in the campground store and compared the price with Disney's campground. Not a huge difference; here it cost $2.71 while it was $2.95 down there. Still very expensive compared to home. We prepared crepes for breakfast. They tasted good. Maple syrup, whipped cream and coffee does not hurt either.

The campsite we ended up with is actually very nice. Unlike most other sites, we have what appears to be about 3 big campsites to our disposal. So we have a lot of room next to the trailer for the kids to play around. This particular location could be a good place to go to with our friends from back home, if we decided to go south together in a few years. Only caveat is that the ground is a bit hard, making it a bit touch to drive tent poles down. The kids biked around both before and after breakfast. Karl checked out pools (they have 3 on this campground).

A little while later Lilly took the kids over to one of the pools in the campground. Even though it slowly warmed up, it is nowhere near as warm as Orlando or Myrtle Beach so they brought towels with them to the pool. After a little while, Isabella came back and picked up her flippers. About 20 minutes later, Erik came back to the trailer and asked for his flippers. I asked him if the pool was nice. He said the water was almost freezing cold. I can understand him. Even though the air feels nice and comfortable, this place is not exactly hot enough to make pool water as warm and nice as in Orlando.

What is interesting about this campground is that it appears to have significant Franco-phone influence. Most of the attendants in the reception are young girls from Quebec. There are lots of guests from Quebec at the campsite and there are even a few signs in French in the office. You can hear French spoken in many places at the campground. I imagine they must attract a lot of people from Canada to this campground.

When the kids got back from the pool, we ate lunch outside of the trailer. It was comfortable outside. We had thought about, perhaps, making a bit of a longer excursion today, but we were somewhat "theme-parked-out" and just wanted to take it easy. We made a small excursion out to Walk-Mart, to buy a bit of food. You can see that some parts of town here have mushroomed up very recently. We stopped at a farm stand to buy some more vegetables.

In the afternoon the boys watched a neighbor play with a remote controlled car that ran very, very fast. The guy who owned it let both Erik and Karl drive it for a while. They were both thrilled. Later, Karl played with another neighbor and got dressed in roller blades, which he could not ride. But he had a good time... He later took one roller blade off and gave it back to the kid, who proceeded to get it on. The two boys then limped along, each with one roller blade on. Then the kids biked around and visited the pool again. They had a live band playing at one of the pools. I worked on the diary for a while. We ate dinner by the trailer.
