Hamnqvist's 2001 Southeast Summer Vacation

By Per Hamnqvist

These pages tell the story of our 2001 summer vacation to the South East of the USA with our Airstream trailer. This is a trip that we have planned for a number of years. The two major attractions for this trip are Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Orlando, Florida. The map below should give you an idea of the basic loop for this trip.

2001 Trip overview map

There are a couple of stops along the way. The more significant ones are:

  1. 2 nights outside of Washington DC
  2. Myrtle Beach for 4th of July celebrations
  3. Orlando to visit Disney World and other local attractions
  4. Virginia Beach to hook up with one of Lillemor's old friends

The distance from us here in New Hampshire down to Orlando is about 1,400 miles (or 2,200Km). That is about the same distance as we used to drive down from Nice in the south of France up to Stockholm, Sweden.

A few days before leaving (23-Jun-2001) we got a note from Vincent Lacasse that he was on his way in his newly acquired motohome, heading south towards Washington DC. The plan was that we were going to meet up at the Cherry Hill campground there. On the following day (24-Jun-2001) we got a call from Vincent that he was stranded in New York state, just six hours after departing from Montreal. Something had happened under the hood of his motorhome that basically burned his engine harness. He told us that he had checked into a hotel with the kids and that he was waiting for parts. One day later (25-Jun-2001) I called Vincent to check how things were going. He told me that he was now on a bus, on his way back to Montreal. He planned to pack a car and head down to Washington, while the RV shop looked for parts to his RV. I checked back again the following day (27-Jun-2001) and caught Vincent as he was on his way to buy a new car, replacing one that got stolen a month ago. He planned to use that new car as his driving vehicle for the trip south. He was not sure if he was going to be able to leave by Friday.
